I’ll Miss You, Los Angeles

Hey LA,

We’ve only been together for a year.

Seems like it wasn’t long enough to truly get to know each other but I’ll miss you – that’s for sure!

Steven & I got married here, in the Los Angeles LDS Temple, a day I’ll never ever forget. Who knew that after a year in Utah, we’d be living in sunny california. I remember leaving Utah and moving to Carlsbad with only suitcases of clothes, not really knowing what the next chapter of our lives would be. I remember steven saying “I’m a California boy, we have to end up here.”

So Steven did everything he could to reconnect with old internship friends to try and get a job in LA.  Well, who knew that he would get a job in LA , with a company that we didn’t know much about.  The same company that is sending us to Boston!

So this blog post goes out to our one year living in Los Angeles!

I’ll miss the sunny weather.

I’ll miss our apartment complex on the “other side” of Playa Vista.

I’ll miss Erick Yamagata – my best friend / best roommate I thought I’d NEVER have.

I’ll miss walking across Jefferson to eat at Sol, Whole Foods, Panini Cafe, ROC, Nice Cream and all of the other delicious restaurants across the street.

I’ll miss driving to Playa Del Ray Beach and getting my fruit cup with Tahine from the fruit man.

I’ll miss those dreadful Culver City Steps.

I’ll miss BBG workouts at 6AM with Stephanie.

I’ll miss street tacos.

I’ll miss driving to Carlsbad to visit family.

I’ll miss bonfires at Dockweiler Beach.

I’ll miss being a seatfiller for award shows.

I’ll miss LA food.

I’ll miss all of my cake photo shoots.

I’ll miss Korean BBQ at Galbi King.

I’ll miss the weekly farmer’s market.

I’ll miss going to LAX to pick up or drop off friends/family once a week !!

I’ll miss taking cake photos on my balcony because that’s where the best lighting was.

I’ll miss the Westchester 1st ward.

I’ll miss the Young Women of the Westchester 1st ward.

I’ll miss those west coast sunsets.

I’ll miss you, Los Angeles.

Thanks for one of my favorite years yet. I’m excited for the next chapter of our lives in Boston. I’m so grateful for Steven’s company for giving him this opportunity to learn and grow. We are truly blessed.

XOXO,

Liz

Lizzie’s Bakery – What’s next?

Hi Hi Hi! Okay, it’s been a while since I’ve blogged about anything and I’ve been thinking about this post for a while.. I started Lizzie’s Bakery about 3 months ago after being laid off from my job.  2 years ago if you asked me what I would be with my life right now – I did not think I would be baking cakes for people!

Most of my cake clients were based in Utah & when Steven & I moved to Carlsbad, CA (temporarily) we knew no one when we came here besides family.  So most of my cakes that you see on my Instagram are for family members! Luckily, I had a chance to fly back to Utah to make a wedding cake for my very good friend Nolan & his wife Tina! Since I was in Utah for 3 whole days, I took a bunch of cake orders – I made 8 cakes throughout the weekend! Most of my luggage was filled with cake supplies and ingredients & I borrowed friends’ clothes while I was there hahaha

Being in California has helped me take the time to practice my cake skills & perfect my recipes.  I made my first tiered wedding cake in Escondido & I made the cake SO tall. I made way too much cake but it gave me that “lighthouse” beach themed look I was going for.

So funny story with the decorations on this cake above – The bride & groom wanted a beach themed wedding & sent me some photos they found on Pinterest on what they were thinking of for their big day. I ordered these “sugar” starfish on Amazon & Oriental Trading and came to find out that the “sugar” starfish were REAL starfish & they were not edible at all & that they are a type of starfish!! hahaha even Amazon thought they were edible because it paired these items with other cake decorating items.  One of the groomsmen ate the mini sugar starfish and said “uhh.. I don’t think these are edible..” & luckily we didn’t spread them on all of the cupcakes!! So we used it just for decoration & no one ate any starfish.. thank goodness hahaha

I also had the chance to do a collaboration with my friend Sarah Tripp of Sassy Red Lipstick while she was in LA! She was doing a photoshoot by the beach & wanted a cake! It was fun catching up with her & meeting her husband! See her blog post here!

So what’s the most stressful thing about cakes?

It’s not the baking or the frosting… IT’S THE FREAKIN TRANSPORTATION of these cakes to the desired location. It is the most stressful time of my life… holding on the bottom of these cakes for dear life. You do not want to see me when I’m in a car, in the passenger seat… Only my husband and my best friend Jaime has witness this & it’s not pretty at all. hahaha

Sorry if I’m jumping all over the place with this blog post – I just have so much on my mind about these cakes!! My favorite part about baking is frosting the cake. It’s so therapeutic & relaxing. I also love it when a cake bakes perfectly – AKA when it doesn’t deflate. Living in Utah, we have the struggles of high altitude which makes the cake deflate – but in California the cakes always come out perfect!! I’ve baked a lot at my sister-in-law’s home in San Marcos & it’s super fun because she has 3 kids who are super curious at what I’m doing.  My nephew Ethan wants to be a “builder/worker man” when he grows up and I tell him that I love making cakes because you can build them however you want! My niece Lexi who’s 3 years old loves watching me mix up the cake batter. I hope one day I can teach a cake class!

Okay, so what’s next with this whole cake thing? Well – Steven has been interviewing for jobs & I’m not 100% where we’ll end up living after we go on our study abroad to Oxford, UK.  I know a lot of people have been contacting me about making their wedding cake in August & I will have to get back to you to figure out where we’ll be in August! My car is still chillin’ in Utah with all of our stuff in our apartment – so no matter what I still have to pick it up and while I’m there might as well make some cakes!! Once Steven gets a job offer from who knows where, I can start looking for a job & not gonna lie.. I want to work in a bakery and learn more cake skills!!

When I started making cakes – my mom was worried that I wasn’t doing my hardest to find a job where I can utilize my college degree. But, in reality – I am using my degree and what I learned at BYU / BYU’s Advertising program to advertise my cakes! Most of my business has been on Instagram & Facebook! I’m trying to decide if I want to make a website or just add it on to my blog with a pricing page & gallery of my cakes? Cake is literally on my mind all the time. I watch so many cake videos on YouTube and Instagram & I want to start learning how to work with fondant & make one of those cool marble cakes! So stay tuned for more cakes!! & lots of UK bakeries that I’ll be visiting! & if you know anyone who needs a cake – send them my way!!

XOXO,

Lizzie Lin Johnson

Carlsbad Strawberry Fields

I’m dedicating an entire blog post on these Strawberry fields that Steven & I went to yesterday! WOW WOW WOW. I’ve always seen pictures of people picking apples, strawberries, raspberries – all types of fruit in a huge farm. But I’ve never done it before until YESTERDAY.

On Monday, we moved to Carlsbad, CA for 6 weeks until we go to our study abroad at Oxford University in July! So it’s our temporary home – but it’s the perfect home because you can see the ocean and we’re only ONE mile away from it! We found out that the Carlsbad Flower Fields were right next to Steven’s parents house but we just missed their season! They opened until May 8 & that’s the day we moved to Carlsbad.  But, then his mom said there were strawberry fields right next to them and there was a stand where you could buy fresh strawberries or pick them!

I googled it & found some reviews on YELP and i decided that we had to go!! The fields were only 7 minutes away from the beach house! We got there & there were about 2 cars there because it was in the middle of the day on a Wednesday – so basically we had the whole fields to ourselves!! I was so excited when we got up to the stand and I told the lady that it was my first time and I asked her where in the fields is the best place to pick the best strawberries and she said “go all the way to the top!”

We bought our bucket – Wait – here’s some advice: If you are going with your significant other or on a date buy the biggest bucket which is $20 and comes with 2 admission tickets (Valued at $5) so the $20 bucket gets two people in AND the best part is that you can eat ALL YOU CAN EAT STRAWBERRIES WHILE YOU PICK THEM. If you are going with a family with kids – I would still buy the $20 bucket and share that with 2 kids and then if you have more kids buy the smaller $10 bucket which gives you bucket and 1 person admission. There are rules though – you can’t overfill the bucket where they keep falling out – still be courteous and respectful of these fields!

There were soooooo many strawberries – I was in STRAWBERRY HEAVEN. They were so juicy and sweet and so delicious omg writing about it makes me want to eat all of the ones I picked right now (but i can’t… saving them for a cake). Steven thought picking strawberries was going to be boring but i think he had more fun than me! We filled our bucket until we could

n’t put anymore in and when we were done the lady at the stand guessed it was about 8 pounds.. 8 POUNDS OF STRAWBERRIES FOR $20 AND ALL YOU CAN EAT.

Best tips on finding the best strawberries:

  • Go alllll the way to the top
  • If you want to eat them right away – avoid white because they still need time to grow
  • LOOK FOR BUGS on the strawberries before you eat any
  • If you plan on using the strawberries a couple of days later – go for the ones that have some white on them because they will ripen in your kitchen
  • If you have bad luck finding good strawberries KEEP LOOKING cuz they are out there.

So if you’re in the Carlsbad/San Diego area from April – July… GO TO THE STRAWBERRY FIELDS!!! You won’t regret it!

XOXO,

Lizzie Lin Johnson

Life Lately…

A lot has happened this past month and I’d thought I would share what’s been going on with life! So beginning of this month, I got laid off. I won’t say a lot about it – but it was totally unexpected and i really just miss my co workers and working with my best friend Kari every day. It’s weird not having a job.  I’ve had a job ever since I was 16 years old and if I got a new job, I would literally have that weekend off and then start the new job on Monday.  My life has been go go go since I was 16.  I started college 6 DAYS after my high school graduation. I worked 2 jobs while I was at BYU and the day after BYU graduation I moved to NYC to start an internship! I’m not trying to brag or anything, all i’m trying to say is that I’ve never really had a break.

So when I got laid off – Yeah, I cried a little and then went home and Steven was there to comfort me and he just said “well now you have this time to figure out what you want to do next.” & in my mind – I’m like “omg there’s no steady income coming in, you’re still in school, how are we gonna live!?!?” Luckily, we have savings and we are totally fine. But it was so weird not having a regular routine. Every day would be the same – wake up, gym, breakfast, go to work, come home, cook dinner, hang out with Steven, sleep. I even had certain times where I would drink my water!! haha

Anyways – with all the time I had, I started baking more cakes and practicing different techniques, learning how to frost and finally started my own cake insta – @lizzies_bakery! I’m still a way amateur baker / I’m super shy still because there are way more awesome bakers that I follow on my personal instagram! But the thing with cakes and why I love them so much is that I can make something from scratch and decorate it how I want or combine different flavors together and it will be something so delicious! and you know me – I LOVE SWEETS. On my spare time, I would always just be on Pinterest or YouTube reading cake blogs and learning new things that I wanted to actually do. At first it started out as a hobby and now I am actually making a little money off of this little business! So if you need a cake for weddings, birthdays, showers, or a holiday party let me know!!

Being laid off is definitely a trial for me – but I know that Heavenly Father knows that I can do hard things and I know that i can do hard things and overcome these unexpected obstacles that come my way. I also know that blessings come when you are trying to do the right thing – Steven’s cousin Rachel needed a nanny part-time until graduation, which is perfect timing because then I still have time to make cakes in the morning! It also keeps me busy instead of just lounging around in the apartment on social media. Also baby time with Buffy who is the cutest and such a good baby.

If you’re still reading this – here are mine & Steven’s plans for the summer. Since my work said I could go to London and now that I don’t work there anymore our plans had to change. Since there’s no point to stay in Provo and keep paying rent – we are moving at the end of April after Steven’s graduation to Carlsbad, CA and living in Steven’s parent’s home by the beach! We’ll be there till May and middle of June and travel to Europe for 2 1/2-3 weeks and then I’ll drop Steven off in London so he can attend his Oxford University Study abroad! While Steven is on his study abroad, I’ll be in Vegas for a little while and then maybe visit my Dad who just moved to Florida – we will see! But then in August – we have NO CLUE where we’ll be!! So Stay tuned!

XOXO,

Our Wedding Day

Okay, so it’s been exactly 4 months since our wedding day! I know I know… I’ve procrastinated. Please forgive me.

If you follow me on Instagram or you are my friend on Facebook, you’ve already seen a LOT of photos from our favorite day ever. Also, this is my first post on this new blog.  My New Year’s Resolution is to be consistent for an entire year on this blog! I know if I am consistent in 2016 it’ll help me later on in years to come.  Yes, this is my 3rd blog but I have a feeling this will be my best blog yet!

I’m focusing on a “lifestyle blog.” Yeah yeah… Lifestyle.. that can be anything right? My main focus is on my family, the adventures we go on, the food we cook in our home, and whatever I want my life to be hahaha I’m starting this as like my online journal for Steven & I. If it gets big, then yay! If not, totally fine.

So on to our wedding day! Wow. I can’t believe it’s been 4 months already. Time definitely goes by fast when you get to spend everyday with your best friend. Steven and I got sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on August 22nd, 2015. A day I want to relive over and over.

The day before we took bridals and did the “first look” photos at El Matador State Beach in Malibu, CA.  It was a beautiful, sunny day and it was SO MUCH FUN! Some of my favorite photos are from the beach. That night we had our really relaxed rehearsal dinner at one of Steven’s groomsmen’s home in La Cañada, CA.  After the rehearsal dinner, Jaime, Emilee, my photographer Hunter, My make up girl Tiffany, and My videographer’s assistant stay in my teeny tiny but cute hotel room.  I got to share my last night being single with some of my best friends though!

August 22nd, 2015 –

I woke up SO EARLY because our sealing time was at 9:30 – AKA you had to be at the temple an hour AND A half before it started so 8AM. I woke up around 5:45AM, showered, blow dried my hair (which takes forever), and woke up Tiffany to start doing my hair & make up! Thank goodness for best friends who bring you breakfast from the hotel kitchen AND blow dry your dress from you since they washed it the night before to get all the sand out. If you could see the sight of our little hotel room, you would die laughing. Steven came to pick me up and it was all getting SO REAL. Like I was getting MARRIED. Seriously mind blowing.

Steven and I got to the temple and I met up with Sis. Paul (Meagan Paul’s mom who’s like my 2nd mom) because she was my escort throughout the sealing and helped me in the Brides-room to get ready! This was my first time inside the Los Angeles temple and it’s just so BIG and so beautiful.

Our sealing was amazing.  Words can’t even describe the feelings that I had when I walked in the room and saw all of my closest family and friends. Funny story: I started tearing up and when I blinked… it was like BOOM. Black makeup just running down my face. I guess my makeup girl forgot to put waterproof eyeliner on me lol oops. I looked like a wreck.  But, thankfully Steven wiped those tears away so I wouldn’t get black on my dress.  It was a perfect PERFECT sealing.

After the sealing, Sis. Paul was helping me get ready and I put my wedding dress on and I was so excited!! But, all of my makeup was ruined! Tiffany, my makeup girl wasn’t endowed yet so she couldn’t go inside the temple but luckily she gave all of her makeup to Kari and she saved the day! Thank you Kari! Steven and I were supposed to be the first couple to come out but since i took forever to get ready, we were the last couple (there were 7 couples I think?) Luckily, we went last because that means more time on the stairs for family pictures!

The temple workers were so friendly and when it was our time to step out to see all of our family and friends.. they said “Introducing Mr. & Mrs. Johnson!!” We came out of the temple doors and it was like one big party!!! Oh man, I loved seeing everyone I knew outside the temple! The first person to hug me was my mom.  She looked so happy and that’s when I knew I just did something right! Since my family are not members of the church, they were not able to go inside the temple to witness my sealing.  They patiently waited outside and I greeted all of them with big hugs.

Then we took photos.. lots of them.  Hunter was so fast and efficient that we were done with family photos in minutes! Then we took bridesmaid & groomsmen photos. Also props to Hunter for working with 14 bridesmaids and 12 groomsmen! it was a huge party! I’m glad I had that many bridesmaids because when are we all going to be together in one place ever again? I love all of those girls so much!

Steven and I took Bride & Groom photos around the temple and it was so fun just being newlyweds! I’ve dreamed about this day my entire life and I can’t believe it was happening! After the temple, we went to Diddy Riese so Justin can film us eating our favorite dessert! When we got there our friends were already there! As we were walking out of Diddy Riese, the pizza place next door – Pieology were in aww that we just got married! We went inside because Hunter & Tiffany went and got pizza and they were like “We are so glad you came in!!! Here, come.. order a pizza, it’s on us!!” Tender mercies because we were STARVING! and they were so fun! We took pics with them in the kitchen and got to make our own pizza!!

After Pieology,  we drove to Vista Hermosa Natural Park because of the great views of the city. It was a little hike up to this bench where it’s the best place to take photos and film.  Google did not lie and the view was breathtaking of the city.  Steven and I were kinda tired and it was really hot so we were only there for about 30 minutes. Then we were on our way to our ring ceremony!!

Our ring ceremony was located at the same backyard our reception will be.  We got there and the caterer was still setting up so we had time to freshen up and relax before the ring ceremony.  The backyard looked AMAZING by the way.  It was everything I pictured.  Black & white stripes, lots of colors, flowers, everything was what I wanted. The ring ceremony was supposed to start around 5:15 because the reception was at 6PM.  We only invited our close friends and family because we wanted this to be more intimate.  But, my dad was running late!! So we decided to have my stepdad walk me down the aisle.

The ring ceremony was perfect.  it was what my family needed to see to know for sure that we actually got married since they couldn’t go inside the temple.  I’m really glad we had a ring ceremony because it made our non-member friends participate in some type of wedding event. Steven and I told each other why we love each other and yes, I cried.  I always cry lol

The Reception –

The reception was so fun!!! We had a pasta bar, crepes, mini doughnuts on top of shot glasses of milk, photo booth, lots and lot of dancing! So many of my friends from high school came and it was so great to see all of them! It was like a mini reunion. I loved dancing the night away with steven and all of my friends and family! So many people came from everywhere!! Honestly, i was so shocked but I love everyone that came and the people that I met as well! We had a bubble exit & we were off to our hotel in Pasadena!

Thank you all so so much for making our day so perfect.  We couldn’t have done it without any of you.  We feel so loved and we are definitely blessed to have the most amazing friends and family. It’s been a great 4 months of marriage and I can’t wait for the many more months we get to spend with each other! Enjoy the photos and our wedding video!!

xoxo,

Lizzie Lin Johnson
